The DiMattina Group’s association with Melbourne food culture started in the 1930s when Frank DiMattina (senior) emigrated from Italy to sell fresh produce at the Queen Victoria Markets. The market stand grew into one of Australia’s largest fresh produce businesses. Frank DiMattina snr. was also a driving force in Melbourne’s coffee obsession, running Mocopan coffee from the 1950s. In its 150th birthday edition, The Age documented Frank DiMattina snr. as one of Melbourne’s most influential in building Melbourne food culture. Frank’s children and grandchildren in The DiMattina Group have continued the food tradition for over 30 years at Il Gambero; DiMattina’s of Lygon Street; Broadbeach institution - Mario’s; Gold Coast new comer - Alto Cucina & Bar, and Melbourne favourite – The Blue Train at Southgate. |
